A catalyst for melamine production contains 30-55 wt% of Al2O3, 45-70 wt% of SiO2 and 0-10 wt% of P2O5. The Al2O3 comprises two parts, one of which is used as an active component and the other is usedas a binder. The SiO2 includes two parts, one part is used as a carrier of active component, and the other part is used as a binder. The P2O5 is used as a binder. The preparation method comprises thefollowing steps: adding water to the SiO2 carrier for pulping, adding the active component Al2O3, adding an acid solution to adjust the pH value, finally adding a binder, adopting spray granulation,roasting, washing and drying to obtain the melamine catalyst. The aluminum silicate melamine catalyst prepared by the invention not only has good physical and chemical properties, such as high strength (low abrasion), large water holes, large specific surface area adjustment range, but also has simple preparation method, less investment, no pollution emission, low production cost, low energy consumption, and remarkable economic and social benefits.
