The invention relates to an expanding type smoke-suppression flame retardant for waterborne coating and a preparation method thereof. The smoke-suppression flame retardant is prepared from the following components in parts by weight: 20 to 24 parts of boric acid, 36 to 38 parts of amine polyphosphate, 20 to 24 parts of amidinourea phosphate, 36 to 40 parts of pentaerythritol, 30 to 34 parts of melamine, 1.0 to 1.4 parts of sulfonated carbon, 3.6 to 4.0 parts of zinc borate and 2.0 to 2.4 parts of ammonium octamolybdate. The expanding type smoke-suppression flame retardant provided by the invention is used for preparing waterborne fireproofing flame-retarding coating for surface coating of a wood material; the combustion of the wood material can be greatly delayed in a heating process and fire spreading is inhibited; the waterborne fireproofing flame-retarding coating for the wood material, which is prepared from the expanding type smoke-suppression flame retardant, has the advantages that good smoke-suppression performance is realized; the smoke generation time can be delayed and the release amount of smoke and the generation of toxic gas are reduced; and more safe time and space are provided for escaping and rescuing of people under a fire condition.
